Thirteen years ago, as part of the drive to stop deforestation, Rainforest Alliance devised a sustainable agriculture verification system that could be used for various types of crop growing (bananas, coffee, flowers, etc.) The aim of this verification, available to all producers, is to allow the local people to manage their resources in an independent and responsible manner and to improve their living conditions. From the outset, the NGO set up programs that would integrate these three factors to take into consideration and resolve global-scale issues at the local level. The environmental, social and economic factors are given equal attention. The Rainforest Alliance logo is obtained after verification, by those on-the-ground, that the farms comply with a specifications document containing over two hundred criteria (environmental, economic and social). This coffee farm verification scheme is managed by local NGOs with an intimate knowledge of the regions in which they work and that participate actively in improving the farmers’ living and working conditions.
