- Costa Rica Project - Community Education and Construction Program
I have experienced the impact of microcredit, the work of the Whole Planet Foundation, and had the opportunity to visit home-based businesses supported by loans from the WPF. I can't wait to bring back a world of new information to our stores. I believe this trip will make a long-lasting contribution to the community. It's an opportunity to put our core values into action.
Overview
Team Members who join this 4 week program are able to learn about and engage with Costa Rica, its communities and environment, and how WFM interacts with in-country stakeholders. Team Members will live and work in one of the poorer regions of Costa Rica and will:
- Learn about and engage with local micro-financing through the Whole Planet Foundation
- Receive 20 hours of group Spanish to meet and work with community members
- Meet and learn about the importance of WFM Whole Trade Guarantee supplier EARTH University and Supplier Alliance for Microcredit partner New Chapter.
- Work on a program of education via English Language lessons, after school one-on-one re-enforcement, led by the local Costa Rican community
- Have the opportunity to assist on community construction programs if self-motivated
- Depending upon cloud cover, see the famous Arenal Volcano and watch live eruptions, and enjoy the nearby hot springs
- Visit the impressive Tortuguerro National Park and perhaps see wildlife such as monkeys, caiman, crocodiles, and the stunning birdlife such as toucans
- Join a turtle conservation program at night and if they are lucky, may see turtles emerging to lay their eggs
- See and engage with sustainable development initiatives
The project is based in Limon province, in a town called La Alegria, close to Guacimo. Guacimo lies on the eastern side of the country, 2.5 hours by minibus from San José, towards the Caribbean coast. Team Members will travel from San Jose to EARTH University where they will meet the WFM Whole Trade suppliers and learn about the benefits of Whole Trade. The following day they will visit the Whole Planet Foundation micro-financing site, learn from staff of Grameen Trust, attend a borrowers meeting and see the businesses that the borrowers have developed as a result of the WPF micro-credit. TMs will learn some Spanish and interact with the community, learning about the history of the area and its history and the social and environmental challenges. TMs will work on a program of education, as requested by the local community. Work may include English Language teaching after school, one-on-one re-enforcement, and adult education. There will be limited opportunity for TMs to assist with construction programs as well. On the weekend, TMs will visit New Chapter’s Costa Rican farm, Luna Nueva, which is near to Arenal Volcano on the weekend. They will see the medical gardens, learn about the rainforest and bio-dynamics and have a composting workshop. On the second weekend, TMs will visit the impressive Tortuguerro National Park and perhaps see wildlife such as monkeys, caiman, crocodiles, and the stunning birdlife such as toucans. TMs will learn about and join a turtle conservation program at night and if they are lucky, may see turtles emerging to lay their eggs. The third weekend will be free for TMs to explore Costa Rica as they wish, popular activities include zip lining, rafting, and the beach!
The program helps Costa Rican families to improve their own standard of living, via micro-financing and sustainable development initiatives, educational facilities for the next generation of Costa Ricans and also assists in the conservation of Costa Ricans natural resources.
